BROWNSVILLE - Texas ports see a lot of new business coming their way once expansion of the Panama Canal is complete.

The Port of Brownsville aims to be among the beneficiaries from the expansion of the Panama.

The governing body recently gave the go ahead to Port Director and CEO Eduardo Campirano to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) toward a cooperative alliance with the Panama Canal Authority.

This is meant to “facilitate international trade and generate new business by promoting the all water route between Asia and the United States Gulf coast via the Port of Brownsville.”

Brownsville’s port already gets traffic from vessels that use the canal.

Work began in 2007 on a $5.3 billion project to add a third set of locks and widen and deepen the canal’s existing navigation channels in order to accommodate the newest, largest generation of cargo vessels.

The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2014, but suffered substantial delays due to a number of factors, including work stoppages, cost disputes and materials issues.

The new locks are expected to be in service next year. Texas ports have been rushing to add or upgrade infrastructure to accommodate growing cargo activity, expected to get even more of a boost once the canal expansion is complete.
