HOUSTON - The average size of apartments is shrinking in big cities, but not by much in Houston, according to a new report by RCLCO.

As residents opt for smaller apartments that provide more shared amenities or are in urban locations, apartments are getting smaller on average, the housing consulting firm found.

Among the top 20 metro areas, apartments built from 2010 to 2016 average 917 sf.

The size represents a 7 percent reduction in space from the average of 988 sf for units built from 2000 through 2009.

In Houston, the average unit size shrunk by 12 feet, or 1 percent, compared with those built from 2000 through 2009.

Recently built apartments in the Houston metro area average 978 sf.

The newer apartments in Dallas are 6 percent smaller, with an average size of 909 sf.

A main reason for the drop in the average is the type of units being built, according to the report, which used data from apartment information firm Axiometrics.
