SAN ANTONIO - The South Texas Medical Center is undergoing more dramatic change as work continues on a roughly $250 million expansion of Methodist Health Care System’s flagship campus that will add about 500,000 sf.

One of the highlights of that project is a major expansion of Methodist Children’s Hospital, which is well underway.

When the project is completed, Methodist Children’s Hospital will gain a new seven-story tower and all private patient rooms.

The expansion will provide space for 15 more emergency department exam rooms, while the number of neonatal intensive care unit beds will expand from 78 to 94.

The expansion project will give Methodist Children’s Hospital

  • 52 private pre-operative beds,
  • 18 additional mother-baby rooms, and
  • 22 intensive care rooms.

Methodist officials said the project will reach another important milestone in September when the children’s emergency department gains 15 new exam rooms.

“As the provider for many services not offered anywhere else in South Texas—and in some cases, the country—the need exceeded the capacity,” Methodist Children’s Hospital CEO Rob Lenza said. “With the new Children’s Tower, Methodist will have more beds to serve even more children.”
