This is the first time a Texas site has been deemed of "outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity."
The nomination process was launched in 2006 by the San Antonio Conservation Society. The City of San Antonio, Bexar County and the Texas General Land Office, which manages the missions, joined the campaign later.
The Alamo and the four missions at Concepción, San Jose, San Juan and Espada join over 1,000 other Heritage Sites worldwide.
