The project, Imperial Market, will be on the banks of Oyster Creek and have 269,600 sf of retail and restaurant space, some of which will be in Imperial Sugar's old three-bay warehouse.

Other plans include:

  • redevelopment of the 90-year-old, eight-story char house into a 120-room Aloft Hotel;
  • development of 10,000 sf of conference space with a fitness center;
  • restoration and relocation of Imperial's twin smokestacks to serve as the project's focal point;
  • preservation and repurposing of Imperial's sugar-storage silos, possibly as restaurant space;
  • construction of 86,400 sf of office space above first-floor retail; and
  • development of 275 luxury apartments by Houston-based Sueba USA.

Imperial Market will operate a trolley, providing access to Imperial's residential neighborhoods, Constellation Field and the headquarters of major employer Nalco Champion.

The project has been designed by HOK architectural firm and will be constructed by Harvey Builders with a budget of around $160 million. Construction could begin by the end of the year and finish in spring 2017.

The 720-acre Imperial community is off US 90 near SH 6.
