A nest egg of approximately $369,857, along with Social Security, is all that’s necessary to retire comfortably in the Rio Grande Valley city.

City Manager Roy "Roel" Rodriguez said the city "has one of the largest public libraries in Texas, miles and miles of hike and bike trails, free events and concerts year round, an outstanding parks system, great weather and one of the lowest property tax rates in the state. McAllen’s price point is great."

SmartAsset used cost of living and tax rates to calculate the nest egg that would be sufficient to live off Social Security and savings alone.
