SAN ANTONIO (San Antonio Express-News) – The University Health System’s board has approved $50 million in capital projects, including consolidating all of its pediatric inpatient services under one roof in the Horizon Tower at University Hospital.

The board will pay for the projects by pursuing $18 million in certificates of obligation and pulling $24 million from its capital reserves. The remaining $8.4 million in funding was approved in a separate board vote last week.

The health system’s tax rate will remain the same. It will repay the $18 million debt in two years, using a two-thirds of a cent growth in its debt service fund, which it expects to reap through increased taxable property values.

The other projects being funded are construction of new space to house the Heart & Vascular Institute at University Hospital and building a new facility to house the health system’s Northwest side primary care clinic and dialysis center. Currently, those facilities are in separately leased spaces.
