LUBBOCK – After four years and a $49 million face lift, Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport’s east-west runway is set to reopen.

And as work on the 8,100-foot runway nears completion, an over $40 million project to resurface the airport’s north-south runway is in the works, with both projects set to be funded more than 90 percent by federal grants.

The City of Lubbock is requesting bids for the design process of the airport’s north-south runway resurfacing project after the airport received a $2.2 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for the design phase, according to James Loomis, the airport director.

The proposed grant will go to Lubbock’s City Council for approval and design work should begin in October.
