THOMPSONS, FORT BEND COUNTY - NRG Energy Inc. is set to start construction on a $24 million natural gas combustion turbine generating unit at its W.A. Parish plant, the largest generator of electricity in Texas.
Completion is expected by summer 2013. The new unit will add 75 megawatts of electrical generation to the Texas power grid.
In 2015, the company expects to use the unit as part of a post-combustion carbon capture system designed to take in 90 percent of the carbon dioxide released at an existing coal unit at the Parish plant.
