HOUSTON – The median household income in Houston was $42,877 in 2011, compared with the national figure of $50,502, according to statistics released from the 2011 American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau. The new figure marks an increase of $542 from 2010’s median income.

In 2011, the median value for an owner-occupied home was $122,100. In the nation as a whole, the value was $173,600. The median gross rent (rent plus utilities) was $808, compared with $871 for the nation as a whole.

Among Houston’s 25-and-older population, 28.7 percent had a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is on par with 28.5 percent nationally.
