AUSTIN - Designs are nearly complete for the 200,000-sf library that will be in downtown’s southwest corner. The six-story library will contain 530,000 books and other materials as well as 24,000 electronic books. Construction is expected to start next fall.

Estimated to cost $120 million, the library will include an atrium, multiple gathering spaces and a street-level cafe. The building will also have computers and technology and a bookstore where old library books are sold.

Designs for the library include rainwater harvesting and solar panels, and bike parking in addition to a 200-space parking garage.

With a grand opening in spring 2016, the new library will replace the 33-year-old John Henry Faulk Central Library, which will be used as archival and display space for the nearby Austin History Center.
