HEREFORD, DEAF SMITH COUNTY - Amarillo College (AC) officials have broken ground on the construction of the new Amarillo College Hereford Campus. The construction on the Everett & Mabel McDougal Hinkson Memorial Campus will include a 30,000-sf building that will sit on ten acres of land donated by Hereford Economic Development Corp. The building will be located at 1115 W. 15th St.
The college plans to expand some of its programs in Hereford, particularly in technical fields such as welding and renewable energy. AC also purchased an adjacent ten acres of land for $200,000 to provide room for future expansion.
Initial funding for the project came in the form of a surprise phone call for AC President Paul Matney. William C. Hanshaw of Scottsdale, Ariz. called Matney last fall and offered $3 million to help build a campus that will be named in honor of his late wife from Hereford.
The college will contribute $2 million to help build the campus. The campus is expected to open for the spring 2014 semester.
