TEXAS - Several MSAs in Texas rank among the best U.S. cities for college students, a study by the American Institute for Economic Research shows.

Houston ranks No. 9 among major metros nationwide — areas with populations of more than 2.5 million — on the 2012 AIER College Destinations Index. The area ranks No. 1 in the “entrepreneurial activity” and “brain gain or drain” categories. It also ranks No. 3 for cost of living and No. 4 for unemployment rate. It ranks No. 5 for both student diversity and research capacity.

Dallas also made the major metros list, coming in at No. 10. Both Austin and San Antonio made the mid-size metros list, which includes markets between 1 million and 2.5 million residents, at No. 2 and No. 15, respectively.

For small metros — those with 250,000 to 1 million residents — Lubbock ranked No. 11, and Killeen ranked No. 19. College Station ranks No. 11 among college towns — those with fewer than 250,000 residents.
