CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Diocese of Corpus Christi officials broke ground on the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, a 278-bed housing complex and a 300-seat chapel. The center and chapel are expected to open in fall 2013.

Construction of the new, multi-million-dollar project is the result of a land swap agreement between the university and the diocese.

The university received diocese-owned property at 1119 W. Santa Gertrudis Ave., where St. Thomas Aquinas University Catholic Center is. The university plans to turn the center into an alumni association center.

In return, the diocese got about five acres of undeveloped land at Corral Ave. and Retama St. on the A&M-Kingsville campus near the Mesquite Village West student housing complex where the new St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center is being constructed.
