McALLEN – The City Commission of McAllen has voted to increase the city’s hotel tax bringing the total hotel tax to 15 percent from 13 percent, starting in 2013.

The new tax will partially fund construction of a performing arts center near the McAllen Convention Center, which will replace the old Civic Center Auditorium on 10th St.

McAllen has not finalized plans for the new performing arts center, but city officials estimate the project will cost about $33.9 million, according to an analysis dated March 19.
