AUSTIN - The local area housing market jumped in third quarter with housing starts surging 37 percent in Central Texas, according to Metrostudy.

Metrostudy's report showed that builders started construction on 2,376 new houses in the three months that ended in September, compared with 1,729 in third quarter 2011. That is the highest quarterly level since the second quarter of 2008, when 2,502 starts were recorded.

The latest quarterly total brings the area’s annual housing starts rate to 7,193 starts — a 21 percent increase from the 12-month pace at the end of September 2011.

The study also showed the Austin area added jobs at a rate of 3.2 percent from August 2011 through August 2012.

The survey tracks Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties.
