BEAUMONT - H-E-B plans to knock down the former Baptist Hospital at College and 11th streets and build a new 68,000-sf store while closing two neighborhood H-E-B Pantry stores. The store will employ about 300 people, compared with the two pantry stores' 120.
Beaumont City Council approved a property tax break for the project valued at about $150,000 over the next seven years. The overall cost of the construction will be about $5.3 million.
The new store would more than double the combined size of both pantry stores — one nearby at 1180 S. 11th St. and one at 3930 E. Lucas Dr.
H-E-B still must acquire the property, but it anticipates opening the store in 2014.
