HOUSTON - The Houston area experienced a surge in construction jobs from September 2011 to September 2012, adding 12,300 jobs over the past year — the biggest gain for the industry in the entire country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Following Houston was Seattle, which saw 6,000 new jobs. Boston followed closely behind with 5,200 and Phoenix had 4,500. Those four metropolitan areas were the only ones with a significant increase in construction jobs.

Houston’s nonfarm employment for the year ending September 2012 added 96,000 new jobs — second only to the New York City metro area. The largest percentage increase in nonfarm employment over the year was posted in Houston, with an increase of 3.7 percent.
