WACO - The Waco area’s jobless rate dropped to 5.9 percent in October, the lowest since January of 2009, according to a report the Texas Workforce Commission.

The Waco MSA, which includes all McLennan County, had 109,700 people working in October. That is 1,000 more than had jobs in September and 1,600 more on payrolls than in October of last year.

Seven of the ten employment categories fared better and three remained the same. Construction was Waco's highest growth industry with a 6.7 percent improvement. The Waco MSA has created 400 new construction jobs in the past year, growing from 6,000 to 6,400.

For other Texas MSAs, Midland had the lowest October unemployment rate in the state at 3.3 percent. Odessa came in second at 3.9 percent and Amarillo third at 4.3 percent.
