PASADENA - The Bayport Cruise Terminal has signed its first-ever regular service in the form of two contracts with Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

The agreement with Princess is for the 2013-2014 season with 27 planned departures; the agreement with Norwegian begins in 2014 and spans for a total of 75 departures over three years. The latter includes an option for a two-year extension.

Norwegian will bring the 2,374-passenger Norwegian Jewel to the port, and Princess will bring the 3,080-passenger Caribbean Princess.

Each cruise line will have a $50 million annual economic impact, including nearly $941,000 in state and local tax revenue and $3.6 million in local purchases.

A total of 222 jobs will be touched, including the creation of almost 100 new jobs. The cruise lines are expected to bring in about 275,000 passengers from 2013 to 2016.

The $108.4 million, 96,000-sf Bayport Cruise Terminal has been empty since 2008.
