HOUSTON - The fastest-growing economies are in the developing world, a new study from the Brookings Institution says.

Brookings ranked Houston No. 40 among the world's largest 300 metropolitan economies, but it was the top-rated metro region in North America. The report says the city has only partially recovered from the recession.

Brookings' "Global MetroMonitor 2012: Slowdown, Recovery, and Interdependence" analyzed the changes in per-capita gross domestic product and employment changes from 2011 to 2012.

Brookings notes that Houston is outperforming the U.S. in terms of employment change, but is not growing as fast in terms of GDP per capita.

U.S. cities that outperformed the national average in both GDP per capital and employment growth were: Boston, Detroit, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Seattle and Worcester.
