HOUSTON - Texas Southern University (TSU) regents plan to build a new $41.5 million, 800-bed student resident housing complex on the eastern edge of campus.

The 215,000-sf, seven-story building will feature social and study areas on each residential floor, a dining hall, locker storage, laundry on each residential floor, a convenience store and roof terrace.

The rooms are double occupancy with a shared bathroom. TSU officials expect to select a general contractor for the housing facility this year and begin construction in May 2013. The new complex should be completed in July 2014.

The facility will allow the university to house nearly all of its incoming freshmen on campus. Today, 1,300 students live in six campus housing complexes. The building is part of a two-year plan aimed at attracting students and increasing graduation rates.

TSU has 9,500 students and is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. The 150-acre campus is in the Third Ward at Cleburne and Ennis.
