HOUSTON - BP Plc. is in the midst of building a new 110,000-sf supercomputing facility, which it says is the largest commercial research supercomputer complex in the world, at its U.S. headquarters located at 501 Westlake Park Blvd.

This 110,000-sf, three-story facility is part of London-based BP’s more than $100 million investment in high-performance computing over the course of the next five years.

Much of the facility will be devoted to supercomputers analyzing seismic and geologic data gathered from onshore and offshore sites across the world.

The new facility will have space for 50 employees. BP will relocate 25 employees from its high-performance computing team and another 15 employees from its upstream computing team to the new facility.

The company also plans to increase the high-performance computing team by about 25 percent in the next five years. Completion is set for mid-2013.
