HOUSTON - The Port of Galveston has been working on expanding the wharf on two of its piers to better accommodate cargo opportunities.

The port recently completed the first phase of the expansion, which cost $5.2 million dollars, part of which was funded by a government disaster assistance grant relating to Hurricane Ike.

In this first phase, the port expanded the wharf near Del Monte Fresh Produce NA’s warehouse facility from a width of 45 feet to an 85-foot width. Del Monte also just completed a renovation of its refrigerated warehouse where it plans to store more fresh food shipped into Galveston.

The second phase of the project, which will expand the remaining part of the port’s piers 16 and 18 to an 85-foot width, is expected to be complete in July of 2013 and cost about $5 million.
