GALVESTON - Mickey Mouse will not set sail from Galveston as often as originally planned.

The Disney Cruise Line will sail out of the Port of Galveston 37 times next year, but a tentative plan to sail out of the isle port 19 times in 2014 was scrapped.

The company announced Dec. 4 the Disney Magic would be sailing out of Port Canaveral, Fla., beginning in 2014.

Even though Disney will not send its ships to Galveston in 2014, the company’s contract stipulates it is required to provide an undisclosed amount of annual revenue to the port. Disney must still meet that required revenue, even if its ships don’t come to the port, said Port Director Mike Mierzwa.

“I am also concerned that roughly 7,500 to 8,000 hours of labor will be lost because the ships are not here," Mierzwa said.

The cruise line had a good experience in Galveston but made the decision to try a different port based on guest demand for more options out of Port Canaveral.
