HOUSTON - St. Martin's Episcopal Church has converted a three-acre field into a youth center, outreach institute and Boy Scout lodge, adding 30,000-sf to what was already one of the largest Episcopal churches in the country.

Construction crews recently completed the $25 million expansion of the church campus, located at 717 Sage. The church acquired the three acres just east of the main campus for $12 million in 2007, and groundbreaking occurred April 10, 2011.

The youth facility doubles the current space available for church youths and includes an indoor theater stage, a kitchen and snack bar and seven classrooms for small-group study. In addition, the center houses recreational space complete with video-game stations, a pool table and an area for indoor half-court basketball.

The other new facility, the Hope and Healing Center, offers meeting space for the more than 20 support and recovery groups that meet at St. Martin's.

The church has more than 8,530 members and Sunday worship attendance averages 1,284.

The church already has its eye on another project as it recently purchased a 48,000-sf building at 5005 Woodway with plans to use it for expanded ministry projects.
