SAN ANTONIO - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) with a $29.75 million investment as part of its Choice Neighborhoods Initiative.

The grant will go to redevelop Wheatley Courts, a 248-unit multifamily community located in San Antonio's Eastside neighborhood.

SAHA drew an additional $63 million in private and public investments. The various investments and grants will pour about $100 million into a broad range of projects to transform the East Side.

The median annual income at Wheatley is $5,000. About 47 percent of residents in the neighborhood live below the poverty level. SAHA will create or preserve a total 591 housing units as part of its overall effort to revitalize the Eastside neighborhood.

Besides the Wheatley redevelopment, schools will add slots in prekindergarten classes, and residents will have more opportunities to complete their GEDs or go back to school.

Improved bus routes in the area, better street lighting, expansion of a health center, and construction of a “safe house” to smooth the transition back to the community for ex-convicts are also planned for the redevelopment project.

San Antonio was among four cities nationwide to receive funding from the Choice Neighborhoods program.
