CORPUS CHRISTI - The first phase of construction has been completed on the YMCA of the Coastal Bend with two more phases of updates coming to the aging 45,000-sf facility. The completed phase includes a face-lift for the fitness facility with new workout space and an additional 8,500 sf of space.

The decades-old YMCA groundbreaking was on Oct. 28, 1941, at 417 S. Broadway.

Fundraising begins immediately for a $2.5 million replacement of the original building. About 20,000 sf of the existing structure is unusable — stairwells, corridors, lobbies, hallways and closets. The new building will abut an existing gymnasium and handball courts.

The final phase plans for an outdoor area with an ADA accessible heated pool and climbing playground for kids.
