WACO - The Waco area economy created about 1,900 jobs in the past year, and the unemployment rate dropped more than a percentage point between December of 2011 and 2012, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The jobless figure for the Waco MSA, which includes all of McLennan County, stood at 5.6 percent last month, up slightly from November’s 5.5 percent.

The Waco area’s jobless rate has generally spiraled downward since October 2011. The 5.6 percent figure in November was the lowest in four years, said Amarillo-based economist Karr Ingham.

Another report showed that the number of McLennan County residents with jobs increased by 2,400 between December of 2011 and 2012.

Eight of the ten employment categories showed an increase, and two remained the same. Education and health services topped the list, creating 700 jobs over the course of the year.
