Houston’s building permits Dec. 2012
HOUSTON – The City of Houston Permitting Center issued building permits totaling $4.9 billion in 2012, a 33.0 percent increase over the $3.7 billion issued in 2011.
Residential permits grew at a brisk pace of 44.9 percent from $1.2 billion in 2011 to $1.8 billion in 2012. Nonresidential permits increased 27.0 percent from $2.4 billion in 2011 to $3.1 billion in 2012.
For the month of December, Houston issued $358.1 million in building permits, an 8.1 percent increase from the $331.1 million in permits issued December in 2011.
Residential permits decreased 28.9 percent, from $135.8 million in December 2011 to $96.6 million in December 2012. The year-over-year decrease was primarily due to the larger value of multifamily permits issued in December 2011 ($58.7 million) compared to December 2012 ($2.7 million).
Nonresidential permits grew 33.9 percent, from $195.3 million in December 2011 to $261.5 million in December 2012. Permits for parking garages contributed to a fifth of the year-over-year growth in nonresidential permits, increasing 440.5 percent from $4.2 million in December 2011 to $22.9 million in December 2012.
