SAN ANTONIO - The greater San Antonio restaurant scene is growing. Over the 12 months ended November 30, 2012, 172 new restaurants opened for business in the Alamo City, according to a report by NPD Group. As of November 2011, there were 4,654 restaurants. A year later, that number rose to 4,826 — a 4 percent increase.

The report also shows that the number of chain restaurants grew by 4 percent. There were a total of 2,395 chain restaurants as of November 2012 — an 88-store increase from the 2,307 chain sites open as of November 2011.

Looking at the independents — those operations that have one or two units — there were 2,347 such eateries in the San Antonio MSA as of November 2011. In 2012, another 84 sites had opened for business for a total of 2,431 independent restaurants. This represents an increase of 4 percent.

The San Antonio numbers are part of NPD’s Fall 2012 Recount — which includes restaurants open as of September 30, 2012.
