HOUSTON - More than $10.6 billion in construction contracts were awarded in the Houston metro area in 2012, up 19.2 percent from the $9 billion awarded in 2011, according to McGraw Hill Construction.

Residential contracts totaled $7 billion in 2012, up 31.5 percent from $5.3 billion in 2011. Commercial contracts totaled $3.7 billion in 2012, up 1.1 percent from $3.6 billion in 2011.

For December 2012, construction contracts for the Houston metro totaled $768.8 million, down 3.2 percent from $794.5 million in December 2011. Nonresidential construction slipped 21.3 percent, while contracts for residential construction increased 11.6 percent compared to December 2011.

Residential includes single-family homes, duplexes and apartments.

Values for 2012 are incomplete and will be revised over the coming months. McGraw-Hill has also revised residential construction for 2011 up by $242.4 million and commercial up by $292.5 million. As a result, there was $534.9 million more construction activity in 2011 than originally reported. The Greater Houston Partnership expects similar revisions for ’12 when the final data is released this time next year.
