HARLINGEN - Harlingen has been named the city with the nation’s lowest cost of living by the Council for Community and Economic Research, which recently compared the cost of living in 306 urban areas in United States. Harlingen also topped the list in 2011 and 2010.

The after-tax cost to maintain a standard of living enjoyed by the average company manager or other professional is about 17 percent lower than the national average, the council found.

A pound of ground beef in Harlingen costs $2.35, compared with $3.30 nationally as of January.

The nonprofit organization looked at the price of housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services.
