PLAINVIEW, HALE COUNTY – Packers Sanitation Services Inc. has closed is operations laying off 125 employees, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The closure was in reaction to the closure of the Cargill beef-processing plant, which Packers Sanitation Services was contracted to clean.

Cargill was the largest employer in the city and Hale County, employing nearly 2,000 people in the Plainview area with a payroll of more than $60 million.

An inspection company, Marshfield Foods, also laid off 20 employees, but relocated about half of them to other Marshfield sites, according to Danny Soliz, director of business development for Workforce Solutions South Plains.
