HOUSTON - Houston is tops on a list of cities ranked by the number of multifamily permits issued in 2012 with 8,942 units, according to AXIOMetrics Inc.

Austin came in second with 7,545 units, and Dallas came in fourth at 6,028 units.

Other top locations included Seattle, Wash. with 6,575 units; Los Angeles, Calif. with 5,540 units; Denver, Colo. at 4,356 units; and Raleigh, N.C. with 3,549 units.

Nationally, annual effective rent growth in 2012 was 3.6 percent, compared to 4.2 percent in 2011. Occupancy also increased slightly, from 93.7 percent in 2011 to 94.3 percent in 2012.
