BULLARD, SMITH COUNTY - Construction has started on a new boarding house at The Brook Hill School at 1051 N. Houston St. The 40-bed dwelling will double the size of the boarding community when it opens in fall 2013. Construction costs are estimated at $2.09 million, according to state filings.

The new 17,000-plus-sf house will have ten residential suites, each accommodating four students. Each suite will have its own sitting area, bathroom with double showers and vanities, and two bedrooms.

Downstairs, the house will have a large kitchen, activity parlor, laundry facilities, a study area and an infirmary suite.

Brook Hill is at capacity with its current boarding facilities. The school has about 300 students combined in upper and middle schools. The current boarding community comes from Vietnam, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, China, United States and Thailand.
