MIDLAND – The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a new luxury apartment complex on the east side of Midland, a contrast to the affordable housing development in that area.

The commission voted for the zone change of the area to a planned district for a housing development, generally located west of Lamesa Rd. and about halfway between Wadley Ave. and Loop 250 or southwest of the intersection at Corporate Dr. and Edwards St.

There will be eight three-story buildings, which will be for 300 one- to two-bedroom units at about 17.7 units per acre, according to Jim Compton, senior planner for the city.

The northern two-thirds of the zone will be used for a luxury apartment complex that will have amenities such as a clubhouse and a gated entrance. There are currently no site plans for the southern third of the property.

The commission also approved 16 two-story townhomes on the southeast corner of the intersection of North "A" St. and Douglas Ave. The townhomes will be meant for single-family use and will be for sale, according to Richard Tatsch, the developer.
