HOUSTON - Construction is nearing completion on the Village at Hickory Glen Apartment Homes, a 15-unit apartment complex for individuals with developmental disabilities that is the first of its kind in Texas.

The $2.845 million project, located on Chanay Ln., is backed by the Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The complex features one-, two- and three-bedroom unfurnished apartments and a 1,600-sf clubhouse with laundry, exercise and meeting facilities.

Tenants will only be required to pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income, after medical deductions, for their housing. Most individuals with developmental disabilities qualify as low income, receiving less than $710 a month from Social Security income.

Construction began in September 2012 and is expected to be finished by July 2013.

The Village at Hickory Glen Apartment Homes is a joint venture of The Village Learning and Achievement Center and the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County.
