FORT BLISS - The U.S. Army has given approval to start work on a solar farm in El Paso that will be the largest renewable energy project in the U.S. military.
Fort Bliss is providing the land — 200 acres of empty desert beyond the easternmost edge of the city.
El Paso Electric is building the $46 million solar farm.
If state regulators approve the project, the utility expects to have the 20-megawatt solar farm finished and plugged into the grid by November 2016.
The project is a big step for Fort Bliss’s ambitious goal of becoming energy self-sufficient, generating as much energy from renewable energy sources on post as it consumes.
The solar farm will provide power across the city, producing enough electricity to power 7,600 homes.
