MITCHELL COUNTY – Plans were announced for a $500 million natural gas-fired power plant near Colorado City.

FGE Texas, a Houston-based company, plans to build the 750-megawatt plant.

Work is expected to begin on the plant in late-August or early-September. Between 400 and 500 workers will be employed during construction.

Once the plant is operational in 2016, it will employ 20 people.

Existing power lines will carry electricity to metropolitan areas, and the plant will use brackish water for cooling.

FGE Texas officials said Phase 2 of the project is to build a second power plant once the first one is finished.
