SAN ANTONIO – Business is starting to look up for home-improvement retailers and housing-related manufacturers in San Antonio, thanks to the onset of spring and the area’s improving housing market.

National chains like Lowe’s and The Home Depot have increased their local hiring to prepare for the crowds of do-it-yourself homeowners that typically swarm home-improvement stores after the first day of spring.

It is estimated that Home Depot hired more than 750 new employees to fill mostly part-time and seasonal positions in 19 stores in San Antonio. While at Lowe’s, nearly 300 seasonal employees were needed to staff 11 locations in the city.

Nationally, Home Depot plans to increase its payroll by 80,000 employees this spring compared with a seasonal bump of 70,000 last year. Lowe’s announced it would hire 45,000 seasonal workers but would also add 9,000 permanent part-time workers.
