SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio-based Huffman Developments has found a new market for its services, but it is not the real estate firm’s experience developing high-end office condos that landed them the work.

The Warrior and Family Support Center in San Antonio has inspired similar projects at Fort Belvoir, Va.; and the Naval Support Activity Bethesda in Bethesda, Md.

Huffman Developments’ work with the Warrior and Family Support Center (WFSC) at Fort Sam Houston is what drew the attention of the USO to hire the firm as its owner-representative in two multimillion-dollar projects for wounded warriors and their families.

The first of the facilities for which Huffman has been tapped is the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir, Va., which opened last month. At 20,000 sf, the $12.2 million structure is the largest USO center in the nation.

Up next is the USO Bethesda Warrior and Family Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda in Bethesda, Md. Construction on the 16,217-sf, $8.5 million facility began this past December and is scheduled for completion this December.

As the representative of the USO for these facilities, it is Huffman’s job to oversee every aspect of bringing these centers to fruition — from site selection, to the design, to the construction of the project.

The WFSC at Fort Sam Houston made its debut on Dec. 1, 2009. The 12,140-sf facility is dedicated to serving patients at the Center for the Intrepid, a rehabilitation facility, as well as the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) — a Level 1 trauma center known for its work with burn patients.
