SAN ANTONIO – GFR Development Services LLC has been approved the purchase of nearly 29 acres on the Southwest Side which will soon become home to a new Walmart store.

The firm will purchase the property at South Zarzamora St. and Culberson Ave. for $5.4 million. The company plans to build a roughly 250,000-sf retail center at the site.

The retailer already has plans to increase its presence in San Antonio, with at least nine new locations planned for the area.

By summer, Walmart will have broken ground on at least eight supercenters that will open here over the next 12 to 15 months.

The supercenter stores that Walmart is building range in size from 150,000 sf to 180,000 sf, not including the parking lot. Typically, a store that size would employ about 300 people.

Walmart also recently announced it would bring its first Neighborhood Market store to San Antonio in summer 2014 at Military Dr. and Hunt Ln. on the West Side. The average size of Neighborhood Markets is 42,000 sf.
