HARLINGEN - The number of building permits issued in the first two months of the year increased from a year ago, but the value of new construction projects remains about the same.

Among the larger commercial projects is the remodeling of the H-E-B supermarket at Expressway 77, where the grocer is spending $3.1 million to expand departments. The completion date is set for late October.

H-E-B’s building permit application was one of 103 issued in January and February, for projects totaling $5.6 million. A year ago, 83 building permits were issued in the first two months of the year, totaling $5.9 million.

Other new commercial construction projects include:

  • a new Discount Tire store near Lowe’s, moving from its present Dixieland Rd. location;
  • a Walgreen’s drug store at the corner of Ed Carey Dr. and Business 77;
  • a four-story Candlewood Suites extended-stay hotel at the Expressway 77/83 frontage road;
  • a carwash and a new Church’s Chicken restaurant, both on West Tyler Ave.; and
  • a new dormitory at the Valley Baptist Missions Education Center at 3700 E. Harrison Ave.

And a 100-room Marriott Residence Inn is planned for land near Bass Pro Shops.
