DALLAS-FORT WORTH – At the end of March 2013, almost 10 million sf of warehouse and distribution space was under construction in the DFW area, according to Cushman & Wakefield of Texas. In April 2012, only 1.7 million sf of industrial construction was in the development pipeline.

This year’s number is helped by big warehouse deals by companies including Quaker Oats, BMW, Ace Hardware and Amazon.com.

Most of the warehouse construction is in the Irving-Coppell market near DFW International Airport and in southern Dallas County in the I-20 corridor.

At the end of first quarter 2013, less than 10 percent of the North Texas industrial market was vacant. Net leasing during 1Q 2013 totaled 2.4 million sf — up from 1.5 million sf in 1Q 2012.
