ODESSA - The University of Texas of the Permian Basin may soon raise the student housing capacity to 1,200 students.

One phase of construction is slated for completion in summer 2013 while another has just begun, said David Wayland, senior project manager of the Office of Facilities, Planning and Construction for the UT System.

“Phase five consists of three buildings with a total of 99 beds and will be ready in August,” Wayland said. “Construction is just starting for student housing phase six which will be six buildings with a total of 198 beds.”

“There was quite an extensive waiting list in the fall and that was instrumental in us making a request (for more housing),” said Chermae Morris Peel, Student Housing Director. “Essentially new programs, enrollment increasing, and retention efforts going up made it to where we needed more housing.”
