HOUSTON added 34,625 residents between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012, bringing the city’s population to 2.16 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau in May 2013. That was the second-largest numeric increase for a city in the U.S.

In April 2013, the Census Bureau ranked the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan statistical area and Harris County among the fastest-growing MSAs and counties for the same time period.

Texas claimed five of the top ten spots on the Census Bureau’s list of cities with the largest numeric increase in population.
