MIDLAND - In 2014, the Horseshoe, located at 2514 Arena Trail, will have two additions. A proposed pavilion will have 52,000 sf of multiuse space that can accommodate up to three events simultaneously, while a 33,500-sf livestock building will be a covered open-air facility that adjoins the existing livestock building. It will have 180 stalls.

In May 2013, County Commissioners approved a contractor to build the two new buildings for $24.3 million. To fund it, the county is using sales tax and hotel and motel tax revenue.

Direct economic impact from the Horseshoe is estimated at $7 million and indirect economic impact is estimated at $20 million, according to Mike Dooley, who runs the private company that manages the Horseshoe.

County Judge Mike Bradford said the Horseshoe will be able to book an additional 150 to 200 events within the first year of the pavilion's opening. Because big events are booked a year or more in advance, he said venue users will start talking to them during the construction phase.
