LA PORTE - New Jersey-based Linde North America has begun construction on the expansion of its synthetic gas plant operations with a $200 million investment. The company will expand its production capacity and will add a new air-separation unit.

The air-separation unit will produce oxygen and nitrogen, and a new gasification unit will use natural gas to produce synthetic gas, which is used in chemical production.

Currently, each day the plant uses 1,000 tons of oxygen, 1,400 tons of natural gas and extreme heat, cold, and pressure to make a variety of industrial products, including syngas.

The company plans for the expansion to come on line in first quarter 2015, and will be adding dozens of local jobs in the future.

Pat Murphy, president of Linde North America, noted that Linde is moving its engineering office from Katy to the Westchase area, and it will have space for both its engineers and employees of its gases division.
