KINGWOOD - The $71 million South Tower — a three-story project covering more than 155,000 sf — has been topped out at Kingwood Medical Center. The project will add 82 beds and 200 employees, according to CEO Melinda Stephenson.

The tower will be dedicated entirely to care for women and children, specifically labor and delivery rooms and neonatal care. The hospital’s pediatric ward will also be moved to The South Tower

“This should give us plenty of beds for at least two years,” said Stephenson. “We added 56 beds in 2011 and it seemed like we were up to capacity right off the bat. We seem to build them and fill them pretty quickly.”

The South Tower is slated to open in April 2014. Currently, the hospital, located at 22999 US 59 North, has 278 beds.
